First passed in 1897, the Bottled-in-Bond Act is a crucial piece of quality control that has defined the American whiskey industry. It states that any bourbon labeled “bonded” or “bottled-in-bond” must meet three important criteria: it must be aged in a United States federally bonded barrelhouse for a minimum of four years; bottled at 100 proof; and the product of one distillery over one distilling season.
