The Good Pour Private Barrel: RD1 Spirits

In May 2025, our panel of nine whiskey pros gathered in Gainesville for an RD1 Private Select experience. Tasting through an array of barrel samples, we narrowed it down to two finalists, either of which would have made for a great choice.

But the one that won us over — after much discussion and a final taste-off — was the Amburana-finished barrel we named, “The Good Pour Pour.”

Amburana wood, often called the “Brazilian oak,” can be a polarizing finishing choice, but with RD1 at the helm, it is perfection. Our pick offered all of the positive Amburana attributes without being overwhelming or over-finished.

The nose is sweet and oaky, and Amburana fans will pick up those familiar notes of cinnamon and baking spices. The 116.7 proof shows up with a nice little kick, and the cinnamon from the nose pops again on the mid palate. Plenty of vanilla, nutmeg and allspice linger for a nice, long finish.

If you enjoy the sweeter side of whiskey, this is definitely a bottle you’ll want to grab. This is also a great choice if you want to have a bottle on hand to share with friends who may not yet be fans of whiskey — with a few drops of water, it’s even more approachable and almost delicate as compared to what a whiskey novice might expect.
